The fire department of the county of Los Angeles has not made public the cause of the historic Eaton fire which started in the Altadena (Pasadena) suburb of Los Angeles.
I visited the site today and the pictures below document what I saw. As to the cause of the fire, there is speculation it started in the canyon by electrical towers owned by Southern California Edison. The fire spread and took off as historic hurricane-like winds swept through the Los Angeles basin. It moved southwest and decimated the unincorporated community of Altadena. What is interesting to note and perplexing to evaluate is the random spread of the fire. Some homes/buildings were torched while some immediately next door were not damaged or there was minimal damage.
These photos were shot a week after the fires stopped and clearance was provided to enter the fire zone. They provide a view from the base of the canyon adjacent the residential neighborhood on Altadena Drive.

On January 6th historic wind gusts swept through the Los Angeles basin. The fires started on the 7th and continued on the 8th and 9th.
