These EastcoastTreks started as an opportunity for us to get familiar with key African-American communities on the East Coast, primarily Philly, DC and Baltimore. Baltimore picked up intrique in 2015 following the death of Freddie Gray.
It was during this trek I decided to visit the spot were Gray was apprehended by Baltimore police. It was in the Sandtown community so I decided to hop on the metro and see it first hand. I was told to get off at the Penn Station stop and saw first hand the projects as well as row homes.

Some who follow my writing wondered if I saw the acclaimed drama series, “The Wire.” Unfortunately during the time it was running I was very busy with basic career responsibilities. I recently was able to go back and binge-watch the series and while it was very entertaining.
“The Wire” is highly rated due to its incredibly realistic portrayal of urban life, complex interwoven storylines, exceptional writing, and nuanced characters, where no one is purely “good” or “bad,” offering a critical lens on systemic issues like poverty, drug trade, and political corruption without offering easy solutions, making it a thought-provoking and impactful show for viewers.
Ethel’s & Charm City Bakery – Baltimore, MD
I found Ethel’s as I was searching the City for some good down-home creole cooking. Ethel’s did not disappoint. They were located in the Friendly Heights section of the city but for me the good news is they were steps from the light rail.
